The Powassan Voodoos have acquired the rights to their first ever Powassan born and raised player as the team added forward Tyler Peters in a trade with the New York Bobcats, the club announced on Friday.

Peters, a 2012 11th round pick of the OHL’s Sudbury Wolves, played last season with the New York Bobcats Jr ‘A’ tier III team where he registered 15 goals along with 12 assists for 27 points in 39 games with the Eastern Hockey League team.

The 19-year-old Powassan product can’t wait for the season to get started.

“I’m really excited to be home for the year and play in front of family and friends and do Powassan proud,” he said.

Voodoos head coach Scott Wray got to see Peters play at the Voodoos July Prospects Camp and he is glad to have another veteran player to add to the mix up front.

“He’s our first ever Powassan born player and we had him at our mini camp a couple weeks ago and he has a pro shot, he’s got good speed and he looks like a prototypical power forward for us so we are looking forward to him coming in here and just adding to the offence we had last year,” said Wray.

Peters did get a taste of NOJHL hockey back in 2012-13, when as an affiliate he was part of the North Bay Jr. Trappers squad that won the NOJHL crown and hosted the Dudley-Hewitt Cup.

That season with the North Bay Midget AAA Trappers, Peters accumulated 48 goals in only 33 games.

Powassan Mayor Peter McIsaac says he has been waiting for this day all summer.

“I’ve been waiting for this signing all summer long so it’s pretty great to see it happen today,” said McIsaac.

“We have our season tickets and I’m sure now that Tyler has signed on with the Voodoos, this is going to create a buzz through town. It will be incredible, he will have a big following in town and it’s great to have a local guy on the team,” he added.

The Voodoos still have a few weeks off but will begin main camp on August 20th at Pete Palangio arena.
