Bears snare NDA Track and Field Crown

The St. Joseph-Scollard Hall Bears were able to defend their N.D.A. track and field crown against the best that eight of the North Bay and area schools had to offer at the Northern Secondary School track and field complex on Thursday.

The St. Joseph-Scollard Hall Bears were able to defend their N.D.A. track and field crown against the best that eight of the North Bay and area schools had to offer at the Northern Secondary School track and field complex on Thursday.

On top of the overall aggregate title, SJSH also took home the girls’ and boys’ aggregate title and the midget boys, junior girls and senior girls crown.

Top performers for the Bears included Jilleen Kilroy, winning the junior girls 400m in record pace, as well as the 200m and placing second in the 800m. She was also part of the record setting girls’ 4x400m relay team. Tony Fournier, winning both the midget boys 100m and 200m and placing third in the triple jump. Ryan Venditti, winning both the midget boys 1500m and 3000m. Warren Huard, winning both the junior boys shot put and discus.

Overall the Bears team had 23 gold medals, 32 silver places and 29 bronze performances on the day. Fifty-three athletes will be competing at N.O.S.S.A. next week in eight-six events and six relays.

Despite losing the overall meet title to the Bears, the Widdifield Wildcats still had some significant victories on the track.

Wildcat Brett Hargrave was awarded the Fergie Dowdall Memorial Award as the top track and field athlete at the 2015 NDA meet.

Hargrave affirmed himself as North Bay's fastest high school athlete by sweeping first place in each of the senior boys' 100-metre (11.53 seconds), 200-m (24.16s) and 400-m (53.62). Hargrave wrapped up the meet by helping his Wildcat teammates to a 3rd place finish in the senior boys' 4-by-100-m relay and a 2nd place finish in the open 4-by-400-m relay. In leading the way on the track, Hargrave helped the Wildcats earn the overall Sr. Boys NDA track banner,

Caleigh Porter set a new Midget Girl NDA High Jump record with a jump of 1.45m

All the Wildcat athletes had a great showing with 20 1st place finishes, 9 2nd places and 8 3rd place finishes. The Wildcats have 26 individual athletes moving onto NOSSA next week competing in 48 events, including 4 relays. Athletes moving onto NOSSA include:

Barons finish 2nd overall 

The Algonquin Barons track and field team continued a successful season with a 2nd place finish at the NDA track and field championships at Northern Secondary School last week. The Barons earned top honours in the midget girls and junior boys categories. They finished the day with 35 NDA champions in individual and relay events
