The Oshawa Generals scored three times within five minutes in the second period as they defeated the Erie Otters 6-2 winning the OHL Championship four games to one.

North Bay's Ken Appleby stopped 30 shots in the win including a huge glove save on Connor McDavid in the final 5 minutes of play to secure the win.

Appleby becomes the first North Bay hockey player to win an Ontario Hockey League Championship since Russ Moyer with the Ottawa 67's way back in 2001.

"It's unbelievable, the guys stuck together all year, there is no better feeling than this after a hard fought series after all four rounds, it's unbelievable," Appleby told Sportsnet's Rob Faulds during a post game on-ice interview.

"I just tried to make a save whenever I had to you know, the guys did everything in front of me, they blocked shots for me and the fans were unbelievable all series and we are going to need that going on to Quebec," added Appleby as fans cheered in the background.

The last North Bay player to play in the OHL final was Ken Peroff as he and the Brampton Battalion fell short in 2009 to the Windsor Spitfires.

Mike Reise, the North Bay Midget AAA Trappers head coach who coached Appleby in his minor midget year, was thrilled to see the North Bay product hoist the OHL championship trophy.

"It will be fantastic to see a North Bay Trapper get to play in the Memorial Cup," said Reise.

"Kenny has worked hard and it's paying off for him.  We wish him the best."

Matt Mistele, Hunter Smith, Michael McCarron, Sam Harding, Bradley Latour and Aiden Wallace scored for the Generals in the win.  Cole Cassels finished with four assists in the championship game.

Nick Betz and Darren Raddysh had the goals for the Otters.  Adam DeBrincat appeared to have the Otters third goal just past the midway point of the second period to make the score 4-3, however, officials ruled that the puck was directed in off his glove and past Appleby.

Connor McDavid, who was held off the scoresheet for the second time this series, was handed the Wayne Gretzky Trophy as OHL Playoff MVP.   McDavid, the almost certainly first overall pick this summer's NHL Draft, recorded 21 goals and 28 assists for 49 points in 20 playoff games this season.

As he accepted the Wayne Gretzky Trophy, the General Motors Centre erupted with a chant of "Appleby! Appleby! Appleby!" believing he was the true OHL MVP this playoff season.

Appleby and the Generals will enjoy this night before heading East to Quebec City next week where they will represent the Ontario Hockey League at the Mastercard Memorial Cup where they will battle with Rimouski, host Quebec City, and Kelowna of the Western Hockey League.
