North Bay Spartans U16 Girls Win Gold at Provincials

This past weekend in St. Catharines, the U16 Spartan girls captured Gold at the Ontario Basketball Championships. In their first game they defeated Penetang-Midland Mystics 60-40. Valeria Rodriquez was the high scorer for the Spartans with 15 points.

This past weekend in St. Catharines, the U16 Spartan girls captured Gold at the Ontario Basketball Championships.

In their first game they defeated Penetang-Midland Mystics 60-40. Valeria Rodriquez was the high scorer for the Spartans with 15 points. Megan Bessette, Cloe Caruso and Taylor Vaillancourt each chipped in with 8 points for the Spartans. Katelyn Brownlee had a season high of 7 points.

In game two, the Spartans played a very talented and gritty team from Ottawa. The Naismith Gaels jumped all over the Spartans dominating them and at one time had an 18 point lead in the first half. North Bay was able to slice in to that lead and trailed by 11 at the half.

The Spartans pressed the Ottawa team in the second half and pulled off a 51-46 victory. Cloe Caruso was a force all game long and led the Spartans with a season high 18 points. Taylor Vaillancourt had 12 points all from beyond the arc. Her four three pointers were a season high.

In semi-final action, the Spartans defeated Blessed Sacrament from Hamilton 51-46. The bigger and stronger Yellow Jackets were very tough inside almost scoring at will near the basket. The back court duo of Rodriquez and Vaillancourt were too quick scoring on the break and hitting from beyond the arc. Valeria Munoz Rodriquez had 20 points including two three pointers while Taylor Vaillancourt had 14 points with also two from beyond the arc. Morgan Meilleur added 6 points for North Bay.

In the Championship game the Spartans played Midland who upset previously undefeated Whitby Wildcats 41-40 in their semifinal. The Mystics played North Bay tough and took an early lead only to see North Bay grab a 25-20 lead at the half. The second half belonged all to the Spartans as they pulled away to 58-34 victory. Rodriquez was again clutch scoring 15 points which included 3 three point bombs.

Maddie Jeanneault who was solid all weekend long with her solid rebounding play added 9 points. Other scorers were Morgan Meilleur with 8, Megan Lefebvre 6, Taylor Vaillancourt 6, Cloe Caruso 6, Katelyn Brownlee 4, and Carissa Ricci with 2 points. Alex Strom and Rose Goldfarb were solid contributors on the defensive end all weekend long.

This concludes the season for the U16 Girls finishing their season on an 8 game winning streak and an overall record of 15-12.
