Over the past weekend the Hercules Weightlifting Club of Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec played host to the 2015 Canadian Masters championship.

The local Norsemen club sent two representatives in the same age grouping, and weight division, and they finished with gold and silver medals for the Ontario contingent.

Category 1 is for athletes 35 to 39 years of age.

Last summer in Scarborough, veteran lifter, Glenn Ogletree won his first ever Canadian title in the 85 kilo class. Last Saturday he defended his crown with almost an identical outing as 2014. Ogletree made all three of his attempts in the snatch portion of the competition; he succeeded with 93, 97, and 101 kilos. In the clean and jerk he made 125 and 130 kilos and then had a close miss with a 135 kilo attempt.  His gold medal total of 231 kilos was just three kilos shy of his final mark at last year’s event.

Also lifting in the 85 kilo division, North Bay’s Evan Moore actually bettered his total from last year and moved up a placing. Like Ogletree, Moore made five of his six attempts. In the snatch he finished with 83 kilos, in the clean and jerk Moore’s top lift was 100. His silver medal total was three kilos better than his 2014 bronze medal mark.

The next local weightlifting competition will take place on Saturday, May 30. At that time, athletes from the Norsemen and Valkyries squad,  and the new OWA affiliate, 705 CrossFit team will lift together in a province wide mail-in event.  The contest will be held at the 705 CrossFit facility on Harriet Street.
