Panthers can't overtake top rated team

The Panther Men’s Basketball team came up short on Saturday against the number one ranked team in Ontario, Durham College.

The Panther Men’s Basketball team came up short on Saturday against the number one ranked team in Ontario, Durham College.

Despite the fact that the Panthers controlled the boards, outrebounding the Lords 45 to 35, they fell short offensively, only shooting 29/69 compared to Durham’s 36/67. The game score ended 85-72.

“We are such a young team,” said Panthers Men's Basketball Head Coach Stacy Gallagher.

“We still have so much to learn and we will continue to work hard as we move along this growing process.”

Top scorers in the game were Isse Ibrahim with 14 points and Garrett Hatherly with 11.

The Panthers will be travelling to Toronto, Ont. next weekend to compete against the Centennial Colts and the Seneca College Sting.

Panthers Women's Volleyball

The Panthers women’s volleyball team knew they had a tough weekend ahead of them. The ladies currently sit in the final bye playoff slot for provincials and they recognized that the weekend would help them edge ahead from the competitive East Division pack.

On Saturday, the ladies offense took over against Fleming College taking a demanding 3-0 victory over the Knights. Leading scorer was Caitlin Hebert, but rookie setter Riley Watson from Barrie, Ont. stole the show, winning the Galaxy Cinemas

Player of the Game with her two blocks, service ace and setter distribution.

On Sunday, the ladies defense was put to the test against the powerful and heavy hitting Trent University team. Despite a great second set match up win, the ladies were not consistent enough to break Trent’s defense and solid block, losing the match 3-1.

Player of the Game, Brittany MacComish, played an outstanding match leading the ladies with 8 kills, 3 serving aces and 1 stuffed block.

Panthers Men's Volleyball

The Panther men’s volleyball team also knew they had a tough weekend ahead, as they would face Trent and Fleming, without 3 starting players.

The Panthers would like to congratulate middle blocker and newly-wed Brandon McBeath and his wife Toni Austin on their wedding this past weekend. Libero, Jordan Gardiner, and outside hitter, Hogan Smith, also made the trip to their destination wedding in Mexico to support their teammate.

Saturday, the Men had an outstanding performance, led by a standout performance by Galaxy Cinemas Player of the Game, Shawn Hoffman. Hoffman had a match high 33 points in the five set thriller against Fleming College.

Sunday, the Men started strong, taking the first set over Trent Excalibur, but ran out of fuel losing in four sets.

“We knew that we would have tough match ups this weekend without Hogan, Jordan and McBeath,” said Head MVB Coach Mark Hopper.

“The guys played as resilient as possible. Hoffman and Trudel stepped up this weekend as team leaders and I’m happy we came out with a win.”

The Panthers will be traveling to Ottawa, Ont. this weekend to play the Algonquin College Thunder and College Les Coyotes from College La Cité.
