North Bay Swimmer beats Olympians and grabs 2 gold in Texas (updated)

AUSTIN, Texas — Dominique Bouchard captured a pair of golds at a a Pro Swim Series event. Dominique Bouchard took home the gold medal Friday in the women’s 200-metre backstroke at the second stop on the Pro Swim Series circuit.

Dominique Bouchard took home the gold medal Friday in the women’s 200-metre backstroke at the second stop on the Pro Swim Series circuit.

The former North Bay Y Titans swimmer, was sixth at the halfway mark but sped to the finish with the fastest split on the last length for the win in two minutes 10.02 seconds.

Bouchard upset American Elizabeth Beisel, the bronze medallist at the 2012 London Olympics, who was second in 2:10.09. Taylor Ruck, a Canadian living in Arizona, was third in 2:10.22.

Bouchard, just missed out on making the 2012 Canadian Olympic Swim team. She spent 4 years swimming for the University of Missouri Tigers in the NCAA.  

The Algonquin grad upstaged another American star on Saturday for her second gold medal this week to conclude the second stop on the Pro Swim Series.

Bouchard won the women’s 100-m backstroke in one minute and 00.68 seconds. She edged three-time Olympic champion Nathalie Coughlin of the U.S. second in 1:00.70. Katinka Hosszu of Hungary was third in 1:01.00 and Canadian-born Taylor Ruck, now living in Arizona, was fourth in 1:01.25.
