The Algonquin Barons Senior Boys Basketball Team is on an impressive run this season as they earned their 4th tournament championship of the season as well as their 23rd consecutive victory this past weekend in the Arnprior-Renfrew Invitational Basketball Tournament.

They’ve won the Timmins High Gold Cup Tournament as well as two local tournaments – the Tomahawk and the Canadore College Great Northern Shootout.  As well, they are undefeated in NDA league play sitting in a tie for first place with perennial basketball power West Ferris, setting up a battle for the league title on Thursday night at the Trojan gym at 5pm.

On Saturday, they downed the Arnprior D.H.S. Redmen in the final 59-45 by using a balanced offensive attack – 9 players hit the scoresheet with Matt Chatelaine and Braeden Villeneuve leading the way with 11 points each.  Jim Hegyi added 10 while Zach Villeneuve chipped in with 8.

In the semis, they beat the St. Lawrence Saints (Cornwall) 71-54 with Braeden Villeneuve putting on an impressive outside shooting display as he hit for 28 points including 6 three-pointers in the first half alone. Zach Villeneuve and Matt Chatelaine each added 10 with Hegyi scoring 8.

In their games on Friday night, they downed the St. Joseph’s Jaguars (Cornwall) 59-33 and the Renfrew Collegiate Institute Raiders 80-29.

“We’re having a good season”, said Barons coach Tim Lowe.

“The boys understand the game and their roles and they have bought in to the team concepts.  They are committed to being accountable to the team and to each other.

“But their greatest skill is that they are having fun.  They come to every practice and every game with that in mind.  They work hard and don’t look too far ahead.  We’re happy about our record and accomplishments so far, but that’s just the process.  The product is getting a medal at OFSAA," Lowe added.

The Barons have OFSAA set in their sights, but also realize that the road to the provincial championship won’t be easy. The road to OFSAA goes through NOSSA schools that have experience, skill and coaching on their side.
