Smith named CHL Goalie of the Week

The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Jake Smith of the North Bay Battalion is the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending November 23 for posting a 2-0-0-0 record with a shutout victory and a goals-against-average of 0.

The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Jake Smith of the North Bay Battalion is the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending November 23 for posting a 2-0-0-0 record with a shutout victory and a goals-against-average of 0.50 and save percentage of .981.

Smith stopped 52 of 53 shots last week helping the Battalion earn a pair of victories in a home-and-home series against the Sudbury Wolves. 

On Thursday night in North Bay, Smith turned aside all 18 shots he faced for his second shutout of the season earning third star honours in the 3-0 victory. 

Then on Friday night in Sudbury, Smith claimed first star honours with 34 saves as part of the Battalion’s 2-1 victory over the Wolves giving the Troops their 12th win of the season for 28 points atop the OHL’s Central Division standings.

Smith, a 19-year-old from Oakville, ON, is playing in his third OHL season with the Battalion. 

With an overall record of 11-4-2-1, Smith leads all OHL netminders with a goals-against-average of 2.09 and is ranked sixth in the league with a .918 save percentage.

North Bay native and Oshawa Generals netminder Ken Appleby sits in 2nd place in goaltending statistics in the OHL.  He sports a 17-1 record along with a 2.11 goals against average and a .924 save percentage.  

Also considered for the award this week was Jayden Sittler of the Victoria Royals who won twice in three appearances last week posting a shutout victory with a goals-against-average of 0.71 and save percentage of .974, while Sébastien Auger of the Saint John Sea Dogs had a 1-0-1-0 record posting a goals-against-average of 2.44 and save percentage of .918.
