The snow was coming down, the temperatures were dropping, but those factors did not intimidate the athletes as they prepared to battle for the NDA championship.

The Algonquin Barons fought with everything they had but, the defending champion Trojans came out strong in the second half and secured a 7-0 win.

During the first half, both teams had trouble moving the ball. Both defences played well and the weather was also another factor. Towards the first quarter, when it looked like the Trojans were going to score, a wide open touchdown on the play action pass was dropped. Then Malik Douglass was able to get an interception and stop the Trojans scoring drive. In the second quarter, it was the same story but different teams. The Barons drove the ball down, but just before they could capitalize, Ryan Wagner was able to pick off a pass intended for the Trojans end zone and killed the Barons scoring drive.

Trojans Head Coach Mark Robertson was thrilled with how his defence played.

“We definitely should hand out the 'game ball' to our defence tonight,” Said Robertson.

“They stepped up and played awesome. Defence was one of our biggest question marks this year. We lost some graduating players last year and I was really happy for our defensive guys to step up and play their best game.”

Coming out from half, The Trojans were determined to get on the scoreboard.

They came out and had a nice return on kick off, then Riley Anderson was able to cap off the drive with 65 yard scamper to the end zone on the first play. That was all she wrote for the Barons. The Barons fought hard and even tried different trick plays and also play action passes down the field. But in the end, they could not overcome the seven point deficit while the defending champs held their ground.

Riley Anderson was responsible for all 7 points that the Trojans put up and in return, he was named the MVP of the game. Riley was very humble when asked about the victory. He was quick to give credits towards his teammates on offence and defence.

“We blocked very well tonight and our defence held us in it the whole game,” said Anderson.

“We were stuck in our own end for pretty much the first half and they didn't score. Our defence held us in there very well.”

The Trojans have won the NDA Senior Championship for two consecutive years now. Mark Robertson acknowledged how much this meant to him. “This means a lot,” said Robertson.

“This is a young team. We had a lot of question marks at the beginning of the year. We told them from the onset that it would be a very tight league and obviously it was. So we said which ever team improves the most will likely win the championship. So I'm really proud of the kids. We're a young team, we got rookies all over the place and they stepped up tonight and it feels great.”
