The former North Bay Jr. Trappers franchise relocated to Mattawa in the off-season and due to renovations at the Mike Rodden arena, the team was forced to start it's season on the road for 7 straight.

Part of the renovations to the facility included new LED fixtures installed over the ice surface by Electratek.

The arena was considered one of the darkest rinks in Northern Ontario, but the upgrades will change that.

"It helps big time," said Mattawa Blackhawks Owner and General Manager David Beauchamp.

"It looks like a whole new rink and it's going even help minor hockey attract more tournaments," he added.

The Blackhawks, who started 0-7, will face the Cochrane Crunch for their home opener on Saturday.

The puck drop at the newly lit Mike Rodden arena is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday night.
