ELLIOT LAKE, ON – Elliot Lake Wildcats goaltender A.J. Smith turned aside all 27 shots he faced to record the first shutout in franchise history as his club blanked the Powassan Voodoos 2-0 Sunday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Centennial Arena.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, it took the Wildcats just eight seconds to get on the board in the middle session as Jason Wilson struck shorthanded to give the home side the only tally they would require on the night.

Special teams allowed Elliot Lake to add some insurance eight and half minutes into the final frame as Shane Woolsey connected on the power play to round out the scoring

With the victory the first-year Wildcats, coached by North Bay's Nathan Hewitt, ran a team-best winning streak to three straight, improving to 3-1 on the season.

Jack Ondrovic faced 35 shots in a losing cause for the Voodoos, who slipped to 2-4-0-1 overall.

The shutout loss came 24 hours after they blasted 10 goals past a pair of Blind River Beavers in a 10-2 win Saturday night.
