The North Bay Midget Stingers will be looking for more than a top-5 finish this coming weekend as, for the second straight season, the North Bay squad will be hosting the SOBA Provincial Championships at the Steve Omischl Sports Complex this weekend.

Stingers coach Chris Winrow is thrilled to be hosting the high profile event again.

“Last year was our first attempt at hosting a ball tournament of this calibre and, along with the city staff, we really put on a first class event,” said Winrow.

“The comments we received from the players, the coaching staff’s and indeed the visiting families were all very positive.”

The 12-team event begins this weekend, with the Stingers fresh off a tournament victory in Vaughan back in late July.

Winrow says this Stinger team is built around pitching and defence.

“We have a four-man rotation and a four-man bullpen,” said Winrow.

“This weekend, we will likely start Cody Sutcliffe, Ben Bosselle, Jacob Brown and Connor Lacelle. To be honest, our bullpen arms: Jon Kortschaga, Steven Antler, Ben Olmstead and Kyle Wilkinson, are strong enough to be starters on most teams.

“The only two guys on the team who don’t pitch, are our catcher, Ty Backer and our shortstop, Kurtis Winrow. Those two guys are the anchors for the defence controlling the middle of the diamond. Basically, the deeper that the Stingers can go into a tournament the better off we are as our quality pitching depth can carry the day,” said Winrow.

The Stingers open on Friday night as they host Kitchener-Waterloo with the opening pitch set for 6 pm at the Steve Omischl Sports Complex.
