Lakers can't finish RedmenSaturday, February 16, 2013 by: Chris DawsonMONTREAL, QC - The McGill Redmen showed that despite injuries and graduation, the defending CIS champs aren't going to go out quietly in the opening round of the OUA playoffs.
And that spelled bad news for the Nipissing Lakers.
The Redmen scored 3 times in the opening period as they defeated the Lakers 4-1 in game 2 of the best-of-three OUA East Division quarter-final action Saturday night.
David Rose, Keven Dupont and Mathieu Pompei staked the Redmen to the 3-0 first period lead.
Kevin Rebelo scored the lone goal of the second period to make is 3-1 after 40 minutes.
Nicolas Biniek made it 4-1 6 minutes into the 3rd period.
Lakers head coach Mike McParland felt his team outplayed the Redmen for the 3rd straight time, but first period turnovers were costly.
"We gave away counter attack goals and that was costly," said McParland after the game.
"Other than that, we really dominated the game we just can't give up odd man rushes to McGill."
With the Lakers winning 4-2 in game 1, the Redmen win at the McConnell arena Saturday night forces a deciding game in Montreal Sunday night.
Game time is 7 pm at the McConnell arena.
A Lakers win would set up a 2nd round series against the first place UQTR Patriotes who dispatched the Ryerson Rams with a 7-3 win Saturday night.
McParland says the formula for victory Sunday is pretty simple.
"Our best players have to be our best players and Spence has to out play their goaltender for us to move on," said McParland.
