Lakers drop heartbreaker to Concordia

Friday, November 23, 2012   by: Mark Pare MONTREAL, QC - The Nipissing Lakers were only three seconds from over time when Etienne Archambault took it all away with a breakaway goal and a 6-5 Concordia Stingers victory Friday night.

The Lakers fell behind early, thanks to a Mathieu Dubuc goal, but came back with goals by Andrew Marcoux, Kevin Rebelo and Matt Paton.

“I thought that we should have put them away when we had our chances,” said Lakers head coach Mike McParland, “We didn’t and we give them four gift goals and we can’t give up a break away with six seconds left on the road.”

Alexis Piette made things a one goal game, before Brandon Biggers notched his second of the serason.

Dany Potvin answered moments later for the Stingers, but Vern Cooper notched a power play goal with ten seconds left in the second to take a 5-3 lead into the dressing room.

In the third, the Stingers rallied for two goals from Kyle Kelly and Dubuc’s second of the game before Archambault’s Laker heartbreaker with three seconds to go.

“We left the door open for them and they rallied back,” said McParland, “They never gave up and worked hard and that’s what this league is all about. If you’re not ready to sacrifice and make good decisions, teams are good enough to make you pay.”

The Lakers continue their Quebec swing as they visit McGill Saturday night to take on the Redmen.

“Hopefully were able to find the intensity that we had last weekend and if we have the intensity, we may be able to beat McGill tomorrow, and we would have against Concordia tonight.” said McParland.

The Lakers next home game will be against the Carleton Ravens on Friday, November 30. Game time is set for 8:15 p.m. at Memorial Gardens.
