The Legendary Tomahawk tourney cancelled

Wednesday, November 07, 2012   by: Chris DawsonThe largest two day boys’ basketball tournament in Canada, the 55th Tomahawk scheduled for December 7-8, 2012 has been cancelled. Event organizers made the announcement on Tuesday.

The feel a successful tournament requires the full support and cooperation of teachers, teacher coaches, administration, parents, and local business.

"Unfortunately, the environment has become unstable as the Ministry of Education and the teachers’ federation are currently in conflict," said Tournament Chair Tim Simpson in a press release.

"In this environment created by the provincial legislation that process has become difficult and many people are choosing not to volunteer. It is predicted that this province wide issue will continue to escalate over the next few weeks making it difficult to guarantee participation of teams from around the province as well as teacher volunteers needed to stage this event.

"A tournament of this nature requires a significant financial and volunteer commitment in advance to be successful," stated tournament coordinator Tim Simpson in a press release.

"Unfortunately the organizing committee cannot guarantee this commitment and therefore must make this very difficult decision to cancel this years’ event.
We know students really look forward to these extracurricular opportunities. We also understand how disappointing this is, and we are sorry for the inconveniences this may cause.

"The tournament committee wishes to thank the countless volunteers, teachers, business partners and schools and local school boards who have made this event successful in the past and look forward to the next opportunity to play basketball once again when these provincial issues are resolved," added Simpson.
