The Nipissing University Lakers men’s hockey team is pleased to announce that Nick Huard, has committed to play hockey at Nipissing next season and has submitted his application to attend Nipissing in the fall.

Huard played his Bantam AAA and Midget AAA in North Bay before going on to play for a season with the Lewiston Maniacs in the Quebec Major Jr league. Following his year with the Maniacs, Huard went on to play in the Maritime Junior A Hockey League with the Woodstock Slammers in New Brunswick. There he won a league title in 2009-110 and lead his team in goals in 2009-10.

Huard was chosen as the Captain for team Canada East in a Christmas Tournament held in British Columbia this past season competing against teams from Russia, the United States, Switzerland, Sweden and Canada West. Huard’s team won the silver medal.

Last year Huard put up big offensive numbers including 30 goals and 51 assists for 81 points in 46 games in the Maritime Junior 'A' League.

“Nick realizes that he is moving up an age level from Junior hockey and has already committed himself to a very stringent off-ice conditioning program to help him with the adjustment and challenges he will face. The team is looking forward to continuing to add players that are serious about hockey, training and their education," said Lakers head coach Mike McParland.

For Huard, who still has a season left of junior eligibility, its a chance to play hockey at home plus reunite with former teammates Lucas McKinley and Brogan Bailey.

"They gave me a heads up about how big a step up it is and they were my linemates," said Huard about Bailey and McKinley who he played with in Woodstock in 2009-2010.

"They will help guide me through the first year so it's going to be a good time. I knew I had another year to play junior but I’ve been out of school little longer than I wanted to. I also want take that next step up in my hockey career.”

Huard will be present at the youth hockey camp registration which takes place this Saturday at Skaters Edge Source for Sports in North Bay (Fisher Street) from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Other Lakers that will be on hand include Conor O’Donnell and Grant McGee.
