Hopewell nets winner in Lakers Blue and White Game

The Nipissing Lakers first action of the season came against a familiar opponent - themselves - as they faced off against each other in a Blue and White game.

In front of a raucous crowd of more than 1000 fans at the Memorial Gardens this evening Team White skated to a 4-2 win over Team Blue.

The game consisted of two 25 minute periods.

Brodie Barron, Dorian Peca, Sam Hopewell, and Lucas McKinnely picked up goals for Team White, while Michael Moreau and Ryan Maunu had tallies in a losing effort.

Goaltenders Matt Hache, Kyle Cantlon and Billy Stone all saw action in between the pipes.

Hopewell broke the 2-2 deadlock with ten minutes left in the game when he wristed a shot past Stone off of the face off.

Three minutes later McKinnely sealed the victory for Team White when he jammed a loose puck into the net.

Lakers Head Coach Mike McParland feels the Blue and White Game is a final chance for prospective players show the coaching staff what they have to offer the CIS club.

"Unfortunately we have to make cuts and over the next week some players will be getting cut," stated McParland.

"The talent pool is a little deeper this year which should lead to a more competetive team this year. All of the players are good guys and good players, but unfortunately we have some tough decisions to make and none are easy. In saying that we have to move forward.

"The game itself was entertaining - approximately 1000 fans enjoyed it and brought a great atmosphere."

Next action for the Lakers is their pre-season opener next Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. versus the Western Mustangs in the 2nd annual Real Men Wear Pink game.

The regular season gets underway for the Lakers at home on Friday, October 1st versus Ryerson Rams at 7 p.m.
