Lady Lakers ousted by rival Hawks in volleyball semi's By Chris Dawson BayToday.ca Monday, November 16, 2009 TORONTO, ON - The Nipissing Lakers volleyball teams were in action this weekend at the Humber Cup, considered to be the most competitive tournament in the first half of the season.
The Lady Lakers finished first in pool play posting a perfect 5-0 record and advanced to the semi-finals where they faced their rivals the Humber Hawks who finished fourth with a 4-1 record.
The first set was close most of the way however Humber managed to pull away after 20 capitalizing on some Laker miscues. The second set was tied at 9-9 until Humber once again was able to create some separation as the Lakers made a few errors and seemed to get tentative offensively.
“Overall we made some positive strides as a team this weekend,” said head coach Marc LaRochelle. “In the semis Humber played well and we were too tentative. We will make some adjustments and look forward to playing them in our home gym this weekend.”
The Lady Lakers reached the semi-final by sweeping Algonquin (2-0), Seneca (2-0), Cambrian (2-0), Durham (2-1), Loyalist (2-0).
Winning Record not enough
On the men’s side the Lakers seem to struggle at times with their consistency but managed to come out of the tournament with a winning record (3-2).
Friday the Lakers played the defending OCAA champion Algonquin College Thunder and after winning the first set dropped the next two to fall to 0-1 on the day.
The Lakers then rebounded and defeated Cambrian College 2-0 however a 2-0 loss to nemesis Trent University sealed their tournament fate.
The Lakers would defeat Durham 2-1 and Loyalist 2-1 however the 3-2 record would not suffice to advance to the playoff round.
Humber College captured both the men’s and women’s titles and are both atop the provincial rankings.
The Lakers will be in action this weekend as Sheridan visits Saturday and then the rival Humber Hawks come to the RJS gym on pots and pans day at Nipissing. Women start things off at 12:00 p.m. followed by the men at 2:00 p.m.
