A group of Odyssée football players made history today, winning the school’s first ever football game. The program, which started this year, is a new 6 on 6 format, that allows smaller schools to field a team at the junior level.

The team started the season 0-3 before Thursday afternoon’s game against Mattawa, but came out the gates scoring on their first drive. The game was a close affair as both teams were tied at 28 going into the second half. However, the Odyssée Phenix ran away with it, scoring six unanswered touchdowns to win the game 66-28.

“In the second half we had more team spirit, we really listened to the coach, we read their plays really well and we shut them down and make some key interceptions.” said linebacker Cody Budge after game.

Defensive coach Elie Sevignac described the win as a major moral booster for the school.

“This was our second home game, compared to last week the spirit was really high, they wanted to make the school proud. They were really pumped before the game and it showed during the game,” said Sevignac.

What made the win even more special was that the school held a spirit day and all the students were out on the field cheering on their team. They had plenty to cheer about as Darren Palmer hit the end zone a total of six times. “It’s our first year, we’re training hard we just have to do our best and beat the other teams.” shared Palmer.

Offensive coach Yvan Michaud was instrumental in starting the school’s football program and was all smiles after the final whistle.

“It feels great, I’m really happy for the boys and the school, will and determination shows you how it can bring you this far," he said.

"I’m happy for everyone, I’m happy for the school and the players.”

The other teams taking part in the new 6 on 6 league are Northern and Chippewa.
