Armstrong, Stewart Wilbert

Posted

(June 12, 1939, Meaford, ON) It is with great sadness the Armstrong family announces the passing of Stew on Friday, July 4, 2014, after a short but stoic struggle with cancer. Raised in Kimberly, Stew met his loving wife of 53 years, Ruth, at Flesherton High School, and settled in North Bay in 1974, after working in southern Ontario.  He was predeceased by his parents, Edna and Wilbert and sister Linda. Stew and Ruth dedicated their lives to raising their three children, Angie Risling (Joe), Mark “Louie”(Charlene), and Scott “Whip”(friend Debbie). He will also be sadly missed by seven grandchildren, Ashley, Tony, Courtney, Allie, Shawna, Kyle, and Holli. Stew will also be forever remembered by his brother Ron, sisters Dorene Jennings (Jack), Nancy Clark (Ron), and Debbie Pattison (Ted). Stew was employed by Kraft General Foods as a sales representative for 38 years until retirement in 2000. Stew and Ruth spent many winter months in Florida golfing, watching the Jays’ spring training, and flea marketing. He later worked part-time for Mosaic merchandising various food products. Stew was an avid hunter and spent many fall weeks at the camp with his sons and extended family. Traditional fishing trips with his family and friends were numerous and memorable. When Stew was not in the bush, he was golfing with his buddies at Clear Springs where he was a member for many years. Stew also made many, many friends in the world of hockey, as a long-time coach where he acquired the nicknames, “Coach” and “Gumper”.  He started playing goal in the Kimberly area and he played junior hockey in Owen Sound. Stew retired from playing just last year when his health became too daunting. He played for the Powassan Oldtimers for over 30 years and later joined a group of retirees, the “Grey Foxes,” in North Bay. Too many to mention by name, but many thanks to the caring nurses at the North Bay Regional Health Centre and Dr. Rivet for his long-time care of Stew. Also, thank you to all his friends who visited him during his stay in the hospital. If friendships were money, he’d be wealthy. A father to three, but a dad to many. In his final days, he said he did everything he wanted to do and had no regrets in life. At Stew’s request, a Celebration of Life will be held on July 19, 2014, at the North Bay Elk’s Club, 6 pm to 10 pm. During the Celebration, anecdotes will be shared about Stew’s life. If you are unable to attend and wish to share your thoughts, please email to: [email protected]. Donations to the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters in Stew’s memory would be greatly appreciated.

As he would always say with a smile on his face, “Catcha’ later.” You got a deal!
