Bearskin Airlines expanding in North Bay

Bearskin Airlines says it will be adding a total of 23 more new non-stop flights which will create more flight opportunities for North Bay passengers.

Bearskin Airlines says it will be adding a total of 23 more new non-stop flights which will create more flight opportunities for North Bay passengers.

The new schedule indicates that North Bay and Timmins will see the largest increase in service, essentially doubling weekday service to and from Sudbury, Sault Ste Marie and Thunder Bay.

An additional 37 new connecting opportunities arising from increased nonstop service will provide a total of 60 new weekly flight options between Northern Ontario's 5 largest cities.

"This is a significant expansion of our service," said Ron Hell, Bearskin Airlines Director of Marketing and Sales in a press release.

"Demand for our service in Northeastern Ontario has been growing as we continue to evolve our fares strategy to be more competitive in the marketplace. In addition, we are the only airline serving these markets that does not charge for your first checked bag, providing for saving up to $35 each way.”

Bearskin Airlines states it has reduced its fares by as much as 60 percent in the past 18 months.

The expansion comes less than two months after Porter Airlines announced it would begin flights in North Bay starting on October 7th.

North Bay Mayor Al McDonald was pleased to hear about the Bearskin Airlines expansion.

“Following Porter Airlines announcement to provide service to North Bay between Toronto and Timmins, now Bearskin Airlines has announced increased service to North Bay, this is good news for our community and provides businesses and our citizens with more flight options," said McDonald.

Bearskin Airlines is one of Canada’s oldest commuter airlines.

Founded in 1963, and named after the Northern Ontario community of Bearskin Lake, the company maintains its major base of operation in Thunder Bay and employs almost 200 people.

Bearskin Airlines has provided the most direct service between Northern Ontario's 5 major cities since 1992 when service between Thunder Bay-Sudbury was first initiated.
