About two dozen protesters were on hand, mostly concerned with native issues and cuts to the post office. Police in marked cars kept a close eye.

One of the protesters, Maurice Switzer said that Harper needs to know that people are concerned about his policies.

"He's ignored everything from environmental concerns, there's been no comment or response from Jay Aspin or his prime minister about 94 calls for action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

"There are laws being passed that limit the right of people to vote, we (the protesters) might even be included in the anti-terrorist legislation for all we know."

The Murton Stoehr's made it a family affair. L to R Catherine Murton Stoehr, daughters Adelaide and Esme and pet Snowflower.

Switzer is also upset that the announcement this morning was by invitation only to a select group of hand-picked spectators.

"If he's making an announcement about government grants it shouldn't be a closed party. Everyone here should be invited.

Switzer says he tried to register at the event, but was denied entry.

BayToday's Chris Dawson will have a full report, with video of Harper's visit to North Bay.
