Our community is full of wonderful, thoughtful children. Last week we told you about a six year old providing water to letter carriers during a recent hot spell.

Here's another.

Nicholas Paleczny had a great time on one of his recent trips to California.

Except, he says, for one thing that bothered him.

“When I went to San Francisco there was a lot of homeless people.”

It really upset him, and he wanted to help. So when Nicholas’s ninth birthday arrived last week he decided to do something.

Nicholas and his family organized a birthday ball hockey game, and rather than give him gifts, he asked his friends to make a donation to the North Bay Warming Centre.

He has a lot of friends!

“A lot, I guess maybe 20 or 21 of them.”

His understandably proud mom Samara says much of the planning, and the idea, was his. “So he decided this year he wants to donate. We talked about different organizations and he wanted to do something local.  We know there is such a great need in our community for just basic life needs.”

The grand total of the donation was $532, which Nicholas handed over to the Warming Centre on Tuesday.

He is sure it will help those in need.

“When people have no food and stuff like that they can just go get help at the Warming Centre, he explained.”

Samara says the best thing about it was the chance for Nicholas to continue to give.

“He’s so proud that his friends wanted to do this and contribute, and he’s told me for the next five years he would like to donate to the Warming Centre.”

“It was his choice and I’m sure proud of him, and the ball hockey was great so it is a win-win, right?”

It is hard to argue with that.
