Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for:

  • North Bay - West Nipissing,
  • Greater Sudbury and vicinity,
  • New Liskeard - Temagami,

Current details:
A hot airmass is expected to move into portions of Northeastern Ontario for the beginning of this week.

Daytime highs in the low thirties are expected for today and Tuesday with warm overnight minimum temperatures.

Communities close to the shores of Lake Superior should be somewhat cooler and have not been included in the Heat Alert.

While extreme heat can put everyone at risk from heat illnesses, health risks are greatest for -

  • older adults
  • infants and young children
  • people with chronic illnesses such as breathing difficulties, heart conditions or psychiatric illnesses
  • people who work in the heat
  • people who exercise in the heat
  • people without access to air conditioning and
  • homeless people.

Drink plenty of liquids, especially water, before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration.

Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration.

Don't forget your pets will be affected by this warning also.

Mayor Al McDonald says if you or someone you know needs to get out of the heat, we have several facilities in the city that are open to the public to get out of the heat.

Memorial Gardens, Northgate Shopping Centre and North Bay Mall are three locations that have air conditioned buildings.

"I would like to thank Northgate Square and North Bay Mall for always stepping up to assist with this initiative. We also have many beaches with life guards that are wonderful place to cool off."

The North Bay Public Library will be open as a cooling station during heat advisories.  The library is open Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Closed Sundays.

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

The following tips can help you keep you cool:

  • stay indoors when you can and avoid activities in direct sunlight or on hot asphalt surfaces.
  • Fill a spray bottle with water and keep it in the refrigerator for a quick refreshing spray to your face after being outdoors.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing, preferably of a light colour.

Environment Canada meteorologists will update alerts as required. Please look for updates on Baytoday.ca..
