Tom Hedican was one of a handful of successful individuals who received honorary degrees from Nipissing University on Thursday during the annual graduation ceremonies.

The founder of the Coach4food program has seen his food bank fundraiser transformed into an Ontario Hockey League intiative.

"It is an incredible honour - albeit extremely humbling - to be recognized by an institution as respected as Nipissing University. The accomplishments which lead to such an honour are never attained by a single person,” said Hedican after he found out about receiving the honorary degree.

Other dignitaries who received honourary degrees included Cree Writer Edmund Metatawabin, 2006 Paralympic Sledge Hockey Gold Medallist Graeme Murray, OPP Commissioner J.V.N (Vince) Hawkes, respected Nurse Susan Nelles Pine, and Canadian Entrepreneur Dr. Colin Simpson.
