The North Bay Taxpayers Association is suing Deputy Mayor Sheldon Forgette over remarks he made during a council meeting relating to unlawful activity.

The suit revolves around statements that Forgette alleged that members of the association were putting public money into personal accounts.

The Association denied those statements at the time they were made.

It asked for an apology delivered in the same forum, council, as the original comments were made.

Forgette apparently refused to do so and the suit was launched.

The Deputy Mayor is out of town for the weekend, but confirmed to BayToday that he is being sued for defamation.

He says the Taxpayer's Association is "asking for $90,000", and calls the claim "outrageous".

"I tried to meet the group in person to discuss this but they wouldn't meet with me," he said.

Contacted by BayToday, association president Mark King declined to comment "as it’s is in the courts".

"At some point the courts will rule. The association will at some point make a public statement."
