Protests may delay traffic Saturday

If you are travelling west by car tomorrow, be aware you may face delays.

If you are travelling west by car tomorrow, be aware you may face delays.

The Espanola Ontario Provincial Police is warning motorists to be aware of potential traffic delays during their travels at the intersection of Highway 17 and Highway 6 in the town of McKerrow.

The United Urban Warrior Society protest activities will be occurring between noon and 2 p.m. and may periodically delay or interrupt the normal flow of traffic in the area.

The Society is based in Wikwemikong First Nation on Manitoulin Island.

Cst. Don Bissonnette says the group's protests have always been peaceful in the past, and adds "the OPP’s objective is to maintain the safe flow of traffic and, when delays occur, restore traffic flow in the safest manner possible."

Organizer Izzy Pangowish says the protest is against Bill C-51, The Anti-Terrorism Act.

The bill has been passed in the House and is now in the Senate.

Pangowish says the bill "forms the core of the most comprehensive reforms to the Canada ’s national security laws since 2001. Widely expanded powers and new criminal offences raise serious human rights concerns including a vague definition of 'threats' that could include a wide range of protest activity that may not be lawful, but is certainly not criminal."
