An important part of North Bay's heritage will be marked with a plaque focusing on the Bomarc missile.

The Municipal Heritage Committee will unveil a Heritage Site plaque focusing on the history of the Bomarc missile on June 2nd at 2:30 p.m. at Veterans Field in advance of Armed Forces Day the next day.

The plaque discusses the history of the 28 Bomarc missiles stationed at a site just north of the city on Highway 11, from 1961 to 1972.

The plaque has been installed on the site of the unarmed Bomarc missile that was installed in Lee Park in 1979 as a reminder of its part of the city’s history.

Due to deterioration, the missile was removed in 2009.

The City of North Bay and the Municipal Heritage Committee is inviting everyone to use Armed Forces Week as an opportunity to learn about local history, and those that have helped shape the city.

Representatives from the 22 Wing North Bay Department of National Defence will also attend the plaque unveiling.

A catalogue of local properties with heritage significance is available on the Heritage Committee’s website www.cityofnorthbay.ca/heritage.

The North Bay Municipal Heritage Committee is made up of community volunteers appointed by North Bay City Council.  Established in 1996, the Committee’s mandate is to advise and assist Council on matters related to heritage places and buildings.
