A North Bay man faces charges following a confrontation with a skateboarder.

North Bay Police were called to Cassells Street at Olive shortly before 8 p.m. last evening following a report of a fight between two males.

A 43-year old man was driving southbound on Cassells when he came up behind a skateboarder, who was in the same lane near the curb.

Police say that the driver yelled at the skateboarder to get off the road, accelerated, and then cut him off, causing the skateboarder to jump onto the hood of the vehicle to avoid being hit.

The driver continued driving for a short distance with the skateboarder on top of his vehicle, and tried to shake him off the hood before coming to a stop. The driver then got out of his vehicle and punched the skateboarder several times before fleeing the scene.

North Bay Police located and arrested the man shortly thereafter at his North Bay home. Following an investigation, police charged him with:

  • one count of assault;
  • one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle; and
  • one count of breach of recognizance.

The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Police did not release any names.

Police advise motorists are to share the road and to be prepared to stop for children who may not be aware of the dangers of the road.

Cyclists and skateboarders are reminded:

  • to ride with the flow of traffic (on the right hand side of the road);
  • to ride close to the curb;
  • that they must not obstruct the flow of traffic;
  • that they must obey traffic signs and lights;
  • that they must wear a helmet, if they are under 18 years of age.
