Car accident volume concerns police

The North Bay Police Service is concerned after investigating an incredible amount of car accidents in January and February of 2015.

“I just had an analysis done by the traffic unit and the December stats were actually quite good but January and February in some cases our patrol officers experienced a 100 percent increase in investigating accidents,” stated Deputy Police Chief Shawn Devine who will have a more detailed report on the situation in May.

In February the Police service investigated a total of 147 traffic accidents and 23 people sustained injuries.

The month was so busy in fact, the police service is looking at changing their location for the accident reporting centre which is currently located in the front lobby of the Police Headquarters on Princess Street.

Devine says they are also looking at different strategies in terms of traffic enforcement and traffic education.

He adds that weather may have played a factor in the high numbers of accidents.

“I can’t say that it’s weather related but when you look at the weather we’ve had in January and February and the snow banks and the increased snow I can only make an assumption that it is related to that,” noted Devine.
