Six homeless after weekend fire

Deputy Fire Chief Greg Saunders says at least six people in a house at 844 Algonquin Avenue were displaced yesterday after fire broke out around 5 p.m.

Deputy Fire Chief Greg Saunders says at least six people in a house at 844 Algonquin Avenue were displaced yesterday after fire broke out around 5 p.m.

There were no injuries and the cause is still under investigation, although it is suspected to have started in the top floor- attic area.

Algonquin Avenue was closed for a period of time.

Saunders says Stations 1 and 2 did a primary search of the building to make sure no-one was trapped inside while they tried to knock down the fire.

"It' an old house," Saunders told BayToday. "There were no fire stops in the walls."

The building was not destroyed but Saunders says there is "significant water and smoke damage inside".

The intense heat caused the vinyl siding at the building next door to melt.

The investigation is continuing.
