Want to help beautify our waterfront?

The North Bay Heritage Gardeners have been working with the City of North Bay to amend, maintain and re-design the Heritage Gardens at the waterfront for 18 years now.

“We are a group dedicated to developing a year-round community based educational, horticultural and environmental program. We focus on fostering pride and growth through enhancing and beautifying the North Bay Waterfront and other approved areas,” says a news release from the group.

The Heritage Gardeners are looking to the public to fill a need for four or five new gardening teams to look after one of the two underpass beds, and a couple of boardwalk beds.

Gardening experience is not necessary as gardening education is provided through other team members, team leaders, Master Gardeners and through classroom educational sessions as well as through a monthly newsletter.

Team Leaders are also needed to head up these new teams. Individuals with some gardening experience and knowledge would be an asset for those interested in a team leader position.

“The Heritage Gardeners also have a team of volunteers who take care of the weeds which pop up among the rocks along the break wall and we also have need for more volunteers to help out with that task. A ‘Weed Dragon’ torch is used to burn off the weeds and training will be provided to interested individuals.

“The Woody Plant team is our newest volunteer team that forms in the early spring and various other times of the year to learn and help to prune shrubs and young trees at the waterfront. Pruning skills are also not required as you will learn while you practice the art of pruning.”

For people who are not able to garden, there are spaces available on the Executive Committee and other working committees.

“Volunteers can contribute in other ways: in our office, with our website, with our newsletter and with gardening education.
Check our website for more information on volunteer positions. You will find descriptions for each volunteer position as well as our volunteer handbook on our website.”
