It’s been a few years since Diane Theberge’s daughter walked down the hallways of ET Carmichael.

But that hasn’t stopped her from continuing to help out at the school where education started for her daughter, who is now in high school.

Like a number of school council volunteers, Theberge helped make cookies, which was the sweet part of the For the Love of Reading event which took place at the ET Carmichael gym on Friday.

“The Love of Reading is something we’ve done at the school for quite a few years now, since my daughter was in kindergarten here and now she’s at Widdifield at this point so its been quite a few years but it's something that has meant a lot to the kids and it also helps promote community in the school because we bring in the parents, grandparents, and any friends or family members who want to come in and read to the children in small groups and then they spend some time in the gym decorating cookies and having coffee,” said Theberge.

“In the past we’ve been able to buy books for each of the students, so it’s actually something really, really big at this school and its something we enjoy and it promotes literacy as well.”

ET Carmichael teacher Cindy Church believes the event is a great way for the students to share the reading experience with family while they are at school.

“It’s really important too that they hear adults read because from listening to an adult read you get a different take on how reading should sound and how it looks,” she said.

“This is our ninth year doing this and every year we see different people so we are putting it out there and its just so nice to have those people in our school reading with the kids.”
