When should school year start?

A quirk in the calendar, means that the Labour Day holiday is later in the month, falling on September 7, this year.

Usually at this time each year, the four school boards in our region work together to establish calendar options for the
upcoming school year.

Given this unusual situation, this year area school boards are expanding their consultation beyond parents and staff members and are inviting community members to provide input into the 2015-2016 school year calendar.

Two options were established with students starting school before Labour Day.

A third option was established with students starting school after Labour Day.

The placement of March Break varies slightly in all three calendar options.

All options include 194 mandatory instructional days, a maximum of six Professional Activity Days (PD Days) and a
maximum of ten examination days for secondary schools.

You are invited to review the three calendar options for the 2015-2016 school year and provide input by visiting https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/YH2CTR3 between January 29, and February 6.

Parents and staff members are invited to complete a separate survey, which can be found on each board’s respective
website.

Community responses will be appended to the results of the parent and staff survey and will be presented to trustees for
recommendation in February, during the public session of each board’s regular monthly meeting.

The final approved option will be submitted to the Ministry of Education for final approval by March 1.
