City police say a male driver, travelling with a female passenger, caused a major collision after driving through a stop sign at the corner of Second Avenue East and Fisher streets yesterday morning around 8:30.

The car hit an oncoming vehicle that was travelling southbound on Fisher.
Both vehicles were heavily damaged.

The female driver of the second vehicle received minor injuries, but medical help wasn’t needed.

Immediately after the collision, the male driver and his female passenger jumped out the car and fled the area on foot.

Police found both within the vicinity shortly thereafter and they were arrested.

A police search, after the arrest, revealed that the male suspect had a small amount of marijuana and a small amount of methamphetamine in his possession.

A police search of the vehicle found:

  • Two different Ontario licence plates, matching those reported stolen to police by two different vehicle owners. On November 22nd, both owners reported that their plates had been taken from their parked vehicles from their residence. Both live on Hughes Road, North Bay, in separate apartment buildings.
  • a set of Ontario licence plates, reported stolen to police two weeks ago, from the registered owner’s vehicle while it was parked at his Sudbury residence; and
  • several carpentry tools, believed to be those reported stolen on November 21st from the vehicle of another Sudbury resident.

North Bay Police charged Michael Watson, age 19, of Sudbury with one count of failing to remain; four counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000; one count of possession of a controlled substance (marijuana) and one count of possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine).

He was held in custody for a bail hearing today.

His female passenger, who sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision, was released from custody unconditionally.
