Star says TransCanada holding closed-door pipeline meetings in North Bay

A story in the Toronto Star says TransCanada Corp., is trying to drum up local support for its $12-billion Energy East pipeline by holding closed-door, invite-only meetings in North Bay.

A story in the Toronto Star says TransCanada Corp., is trying to drum up local support for its $12-billion Energy East pipeline by holding closed-door, invite-only meetings in North Bay.

The story says the meetings are stirring suspicion, especially after leaked documents last week showing a lobby group called Environmental Defence accused TransCanada of having secret plans to push its controversial proposal using unethical methods.

"Documents leaked to Greenpeace reveal TransCanada’s plans to spend millions creating fake grassroots campaigns, conducting 'detailed background research on key opposition groups,' and enlisting 'supportive third parties' to 'put the pressure on [groups like Environmental Defence]', especially when TransCanada can’t," said the lobby group.
