Help Available to people struggling with shelter costs

If you or your family is homeless or at risk of homelessness, there is now help available to secure accommodations or maintain your current housing. It’s called the Community Homelessness Prevention Initiative (CHPI) fund.

Those applying for assistance through the program will be screened to ensure that they meet prescribed eligibility criteria. 

Eligible citizens may qualify for assistance with a variety of housing related costs required to secure or maintain housing. 

As the winter months present extra challenges to maintain shelter, a One Time CHPI Heating Grant has also been re-introduced for this winter. 

The CHPI One-Time Heating Grant is:

  •  Available until March 31, 2015 or until funding has been exhausted
  • Maximum of $3,000.00 per benefit unit
  • Homeowners and Renters are eligible to apply     
  • Expenses considered include; wood, propane, oil, oil tank replacement, furnace repairs etc…
  • Partial payments for heating related one-time expenses that exceed $3,000 will be considered if documentation can be provided to verify that the balance has been paid
  • Must meet CHPI eligibility criteria including reason for applying, income level and asset level
  • CHPI may only be accessed once in a 24 month period

Those in receipt of Ontario Works or Ontario Disability Support Program should contact their case manager for a referral.
