Canada Post customers may need dynamite to get their mail from these Ferguson St. boxes. Submitted photo.

Found this photo interesting.

It was submitted by Keith Bradford, who is the President of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, Local 576, North Bay.

It shows what Bradford says are active mailboxes blocked by blasting mats.

They were put there temporarily while construction on Ferguson is ongoing.

"I am sure you can appreciate the issues here," explains Bradford, "which are not just security of the mail, but the public's health and safety in retrieving their mail, and Canada Post's obligation to deliver that mail on a daily, and I would say safe manner. This is certainly not meeting either expectation which is clearly laid out in the postal charter.

"Canada Post has a responsibility and a mandate to deliver the mail to all citizens, and we believe that that means to the door, especially considering the Q2 report with the huge profit Canada Post has just released, and the regular profit reporting by the crown corporation."

"We are still fighting locally with tonnes of support from the public," continues Bradford.

"We have had MP Charlie Angus deliver our petition in the house of commons a few weeks ago. This picture illustrates the need for door to door delivery, not just in communities like ours that have it, but for all communities to have the same level of service. The service has more than proven to not only pay for itself, but to generate revenue which currently goes to the federal coffers, subsidizing our taxes by 1.5 billion dollars in the last twenty years.

"This is just one example locally as to why we need to keep fighting these partisan political initiatives. Canada Post's revenues in no way justifies the drastic, Draconian cuts being implemented by the crown corporation and the Conservative government," he says.
