New school being built

At the Board meeting on Tuesday, the Board passed a motion to approve the awarding of the contract to build a new elementary school on the Pinewood site in North Bay to Kenalex Construction Company Limited.

The school has a target opening date of September 2016 and will accommodate Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6 students from Dr. MacDougall, J.W. Trusler and King George public schools.

“This new build is another great example of re-investment in local education. It will provide a modern accessible learning centre for our current and future students,” said Chair David Thompson.

The former Pinewood Public School building will be demolished.

The new school will provide generous daylight, warm wood features and abundant yard space with carefully planned, safe access for buses, family cars and walkers.

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Education approved capital funding in the amount of $12,572,291 to
complete the project.

A Building Committee has been tasked to oversee construction, with representation from school advisory councils and principals from all three schools, trustees, senior board staff and Mitchell Architects Inc.

“This is a very exciting time for students and parents of J.W. Trusler, Dr. MacDougall, and King George.

There are three wonderful communities within each school and I expect that when they join together in the new facility, that sense of unity will grow exponentially and contribute to student success both academically and socially,” said J.W. Trusler parent and Building Committee member Karen Matthews.
