Shoplifting turns violent

It wasn't your normal shoplifting at Northgate Square yesterday. Security guards of a department store at Northgate saw a man shoplifting office supplies. Once the man left the store, they tried to place him under arrest for theft.

Once the man left the store, they tried to place him under arrest for theft.

The thief resisted by throwing an object in the direction of one of the guards and by physically assaulting him.

He also uttered threats to both guards.

The guards then asked bystanders to call police, who responded within minutes and placed him under arrest.

Following an investigation, North Bay Police charged Raymond Lazarus, age 34, of Timmins with one count of theft under $5,000, one count of assault with a weapon, one count of assault with intent to resist arrest and one count of uttering threats.

Lazarus was held in custody for bail.
