No intelligence to indicate a risk locally says Police Chief Cook

Cook says the police will be operating with “a heightened sense of awareness” over the next while In light of the tragedies that took place in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec this week and in Ottawa today.

“The North Bay Police Service is working with the City of North Bay and military officials to ensure that military personnel and the residents of our communities are safe.

‘We also have reservists and Legion Halls, “Cook added.

Cook discounted any imminent threat locally.

“At this point, we have no intelligence that would indicate that military personnel or the residents of North Bay and Callander are at risk. We will continue to work with our policing partners and counterparts within the intelligence community to monitor this situation. Our officers have been requested to keep extra observation on 22 Wing, military and military reserve buildings, legions and related facilities and or government buildings.”

“All the protocols are in place and we are in constant contact with the North Bay Police Service,” said Mayor Al McDonald.
“We ask local residents to report any suspicious activity to police. We have no reason to believe our community is in danger. However, it is important that we are aware of what is happening in the country and continue to be vigilant.”

BayToday was unable to contact MP Jay Aspin, however he tweeted "Thanks so much to all constituents concerned for my safety  We are safe and sound and still in lockdown.. It's been a long and eventful day."

Meanswhie, Nipissing MPP vic Fedeli said in a news release,"Today’s events in Ottawa have shocked and saddened residents of Nipissing and indeed across the country.  Our democracy came under attack today, and I extend condolences to the family and friends of our fallen soldier.  I also thank the brave men and women in law enforcement who responded today with great courage and put their lives on the line to protect others.  Our resolve has been tested, but make no mistake; we will pass that test every time."

Fedeli also said he expects tighter security at Queen's Park as a result of today's shooting.
