A North Bay film has been selected as one of nine finalists in the 7th Grand River Film Festival's Canadian SHORT Short Awards competition.

“Strangers”, was directed by Kevin Hoffman, and produced and written by Jim Calarco.

“We’re ecstatic,” Calarco told BayToday. “We’ve done really well with that film.”

Strangers has won in Mexico, Italy and Cinefest in Sudbury.

Watch the nine minute film here, you'll be glad you did. http://vimeo.com/58369252

It’s the story of two older people who meet in an art gallery in a Northern Ontario and talk about art, film and the "what ifs" that occur in our lives".

He meets her once a month.

The daughter brings her to this art gallery and every time they meet it’s new for her---she never remembers it.

The film was shot in North Bay and donated to the Northern Alzheimer’s Society. Calarco gave it a number of copies which were sold to raise funds.

As well a short film fundraiser for Alzheimer's will be held at the Davedi Club in March.

The SHORT Shorts Competition runs November 3-8 and is a celebration of short films in two categories (Waterloo Region and Cross-Canada).

Over 80 submissions were received from across Canada.

It provides aspiring filmmakers support and exposure of their 15 minute or less film through the hosting of a networking/shorts award event with judging by film professionals, the screening of their film in a festival setting, and the opportunity to win significant cash and product prizes.

“Shorts are a fantastic format for both the audience and the filmmaker.  The challenge and art of telling a story in a short amount of time produces exceptional films, and has made this annual program a “must attend” event at GRFF” noted Chair, Nelson Dunk.
