“My grandson is 2, and I tell him all the time that one person can make a difference in the world. But it’s words until you can actually show it’

So Wendy Carrothers decided to show her grandson what that means. She and her partner Leeanne Schlievert have become S.N.O.W. Angels.

S.N.O.W. stands for Someone Needs our Warmth, and the women want to ensure any North Bay resident needing a warm blanket this winter gets one.

Carrothers says it all started with a group of friends sitting around her kitchen last winter.

“Out comes the phrase I wish no one would be cold and alone for Christmas and the winter. And my friends got behind it and it just kind of grew.’

It has grown to a city-wide appeal.

Blanket the North with Warmth was launched Wednesday at the DIA offices on Main Street.

The idea is to collect at least 500 new or gently used blankets. They’ll be handed out during the Downtown Christmas Walk November 28th.

Corrothers says the blankets will be made available to anyone.

“We have a place at the Christmas Walk Downtown. Anybody that is cold that night or would like to take a blanket home can stop by and pick one up’

Three sites have already volunteered to serve as drop off locations:

  • The Downtown Improvement Area
  • AIDS Committee of North Bay
  • Ohana Yoga and Wellness Centre in Callander

Any financial donations will be used to provide cleaning to blankets needing it, and boxes to hold the donations.

Any leftover blankets will be given to other social service agencies in the area.

Corrothers is clear that this project, and the blankets,  are for whomever needs them, regardless of their financial situation.

“I feel that there are economic issues everywhere in the world.  So if you maybe are just tight on money that month and you are cold and you need a blanket you should have one. ‘
