There will be a change of mayor in Sundridge as veteran Elgin Schneider steps down to run for council.
"I was going to retire altogether," he told BayToday but there's not a lot of expereince among those running so I thought I could be some help for the mayor and council.
"I think I can still contribute," he added. "But I won't make any promises I can't keep."
In 1970 Elgin was elected to the Village of Sundridge Council and served as a Councillor for the next 10 years.
Then in 1980 he was elected as Mayor of the Village and served in that capacity for the next 34 years.
Schneider was born in 1933 near South River.
According to the town's website, his father died when he was six years old and he was raised by his mother.
Schneider attended a one room public school in Rye and after graduating from grade eight he went to work in a logging camp and sawmill.
In 1959 Elgin married Myrna MacPherson.
They had with 2 children, Terry Lynn and Jeffrey Elgin, but in 1975 Jeffrey tragically died as a result of an accident.
Schneider has been awarded the Provincial 25 year pin for Council and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award.
