I Wrecked My House

Yup, a TV show about wacky home repairs. But being a klutz in the kitchen could mean big dollar repairs to your home.

Yup, a TV show about wacky home repairs.

But being a klutz in the kitchen could mean big dollar repairs to your home.

The reality HGTV program "I Wrecked My House" did a one hour special with a North Bay couple last April and it's looking to return---if it can find the right house.

And it could be yours!

Just like Matt and Katie Dotey who wound up with $50,000 in free home renovations.

Margaret Robitaille, with Mountain Road Productions, the company that produces the show for HGTV told BayToday that they're looking for people "who don't take themselves too seriously and can laugh at themselves."

She wants people who are a mix of McGyver and Red Green who use creative and unique approaches to repairs.

Homeowners are challenged to defend their handiwork by host, CBC Debaters comedian, Steve Patterson and have a good laugh.

The program is currently issuing a cross-province casting call for un-handy homeowners with a "sense of humour" .

In the Dotey's case, a pull-up diaper was used to control a leak underneath their sink.

And this creative plumbing solution.

"When we bought the house it had the chunky old-style knobs in the shower," said Matt. "The cold water one fell off and I lost the screw, then the hot one!"

Katie takes up the story.

"We got the bright idea to use pliers," she explains.

"The pliers eventually got rusted in the same position because we basically just used them in the shower for years."

"But it made for great TV," chimed in Matt.

Other contestants used multiple layers of duct tape in place of caulking around the bathtub, a car jack holding up support beams, or asphalt shingles nailed to the entrance floor as opposed to tiles.

I Wrecked My House host Steve Patterson takes a look at the home of North Bay's Matt and Katie Dotey. Submitted photo.

"When we found out we won, it was out of this world. The whole experience was pretty unbelieveable and really exciting.

You can apply to appear on the 14-episode program, by sending a description of your questionable home repairs, a photo of the repairs and a photo of yourselves to [email protected].
