Labour Day became an official statutory holiday 120 years ago.

In 1872, workers took to the streets in solidarity with printers in Toronto who were on strike for a nine-hour day.

They soon realized their power when they united as one against a common cause.

This Labour Day, The North Bay & District Labour Council is celebrating with its annual picnic.

President of the North Bay District Labour Council Henri Giroux said “Unions make a difference both at work and in the quality of life you earn. We call that difference the union advantage. Having a union on your side makes your job and your workplace safer and fairer. You get paid better and are more likely to have benefits that help you balance work with life at home. Your health and ability to do your job become important, and your right to fair treatment gets enforced. But this advantage doesn’t just belong to union members. It benefits everyone.”

Every Labour Day the North Bay and District Labour Council hosts a BBQ at the North Bay waterfront.

Flag march begins at 11 a.m. followed by free events.

Besides the BBQ there are giant inflatables, fish pond, candy floss, popcorn, face painting, live music and more.
