Graffiti covers the outside walls of  a building where a children’s playground sits beside a ball diamond and hockey rink.

It’s Kinette playground, and Director of Parks and Recreation Ian Kilgour says the building will be repainted in the next week or two.

“The number one deterrent is to paint over it,” says Kilgour.

Sunset Park washrooms were also hit by vandals two weeks ago, forcing the city to close the facility until repairs were made.

And it wasn’t the first time.

“We’ve had to repair public washrooms ever since we built them.

“”I wouldn’t lump the two together,” said Kilgour. “Grafitti is usually put up to gain attention.”

He feels there is no real increase in vandalism.

But Kilgour says there has been “a little bit of an uptick” recently in graffiti adding that there was a lot five years ago, but that it settled down.

Still he feels the city has been lucky, seeing less graffiti than other similar sized cities.

“North Bay has never looked so good,” he said. “There is a lot of beautification going on right now.”
