Marine collision on Lake Nipissing (update: victim identified)

One man is dead after a boating accident on Lake Nipissing this weekend. On Saturday night at 11:53 p.m ., officers from Warren Detachment of the OPP responded to a call about a marine collision on Lake Nipissing.

On Saturday night at 11:53 p.m., officers from Warren Detachment of the OPP responded to a call about a marine collision on Lake Nipissing. 

A boat with four occupants struck a rock. 

The driver and one passenger were ejected into the water. 

Police say four adults operating a small watercraft during the evening hours struck a small rock outcropping known as “Seagull Island” to locals.

The passenger was able to get back on board the but the operator could not be found. Local home owners quickly arrived on the scene after hearing calls for help.

None of the involved parties were wearing life jackets, according to police.

West Nipissing Fire Service, West Nipissing Police Service, Anishinabek Police Service, OPP and local volunteers responded and began a search for the missing man.

Emergency Medical Services took one woman to hospital with non life threatening injuries.

The OPP continues to investigate with the assistance of the Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI), and Marine Units.

On Sunday afternoon at approximately 12:30 the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU) recovered the body of the missing man.

He has been identified as 32-year-old Eric Levac of Lavigne.
