BayToday.ca has learned through family friends that former CKAT News Director and local media legend Clancy MacDonald passed away on Friday.

MacDonald was the News Director of radio station newsrooms in North Bay for over 35 years.

He retired from radio on February 9th, 2001 and started a new job three days later as Executive Assistant in Ottawa for Nipissing MP, Bob Wood.

During his three-hour farewell show on radio, Clancy received many awards and honours from individuals and groups.

The Mayor and City Council had also proclaimed February 9th, 2001 as "Clancy MacDonald Day" in North Bay.

In May of 2003 Clancy was presented with the "Lifetime Achievement Award" from the Radio-Television News Directors Association of Canada. It was the first time the national award was ever presented by the broadcaster’s group.

Clancy also did some editorial writing as well here at BayToday.ca

Clint Thomas, who worked with MacDonald and eventually took over his position as News Director at CKAT says he was a trusted voice for a generation in North Bay and area.

"He was steady, principled, and professional to the core, and I can't thank him enough for the faith he placed in me," Thomas told BayToday.ca about MacDonald.

"It was an honour each day to be able to work and learn from him," added Thomas.

"He was a giant in the local media scene," said Jeff Turl who worked at CFCH with Clancy in a newsroom that also featured Garth Cooper, Pete Handley and morning man Bob Wood. "I doubt we'll ever see someone of that stature in this city again."

City Councillor MIke Anthony also worked in radio with MacDonald.

"He mentored many young broadcasters and gave me my first full time job in radio 20 years ago. I am hoping his family is okay, and people remember his impact," said Anthony on Facebook Friday night.

Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli also spoke of MacDonald's passing via Twitter Friday night.

"North Bay lost a true friend today, Clancy MacDonald passed peacefully. A powerful voice has been silenced," said Fedeli.
